Week 7 is the phase test week...
So, I managed to completed some part of proposal that is problem statement...
Problem statement is a short summary of the research problem....
This is the problem statement of KJT devices...
These are main reasons of why this project and research ....

1. Knee replacement, or knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve the pain and disability of osteoarthritis. Knee replacement surgery can be performed as a partial or a total knee replacement. In general, the surgery consists of replacing the diseased or damaged joint surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic components shaped to allow continued motion of the knee.

2. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a cruciate ligament which is one of the four major ligaments of the human knee. The ACL originates from deep within the notch of the distal femur. It is referred to as the cranial cruciate ligament. Athletes commonly tear the ACL when the tibia translates anterior to the femur in combination with an internal tibial rotation.

3. Cartilage structures and functions can be damaged. Such damage can result from a variety of causes, such as a bad fall or traumatic sport-accident, previous knee injuries or wear and tear over time. Immobilization for long periods can also result in cartilage damage. Articular cartilage does not usually regenerate (the process of repair by formation of the same type of tissue) after injury or disease leading to loss of tissue and formation of a defect.

Introduction
  • Orthopaedic surgeons nowadays always looking into ways to improve the results after knee surgery. 
  • Knee Joint Therapy (KJT) Device was develop assist recovery following joint surgery or injuries of upper or lower extremities. 
  • KJT is used to reduce the adverse effects of trauma or immobilization following surgery. 
  • KJT units are motorized devices which gradually move the joint through a defined range of motion for an extended period of time without patient effort. 
  • There are two basic design principles that characterize KJT devices: 
  • 1) the anatomical design, or
    2) the free linkage design

For this week, I was required to finished the final year report's abstract and literature review...
The requirement for abstract is it must be a brief summary of a research article, thesis, review, conference proceeding or any in-depth analysis of a particular subject or discipline, and is often used to help the reader quickly ascertain the paper's purpose...

This is the abstract or purpose of this project or research..

Abstract

KJT is a postoperative treatment method that is designed to aid recovery after joint surgery. In most patients after extensive joint surgery, attempts at joint motion cause pain and as a result, the patient fails to move the joint. KJT is thus effective in preventing the development of stiffness 

KJT is thought to improve recovery by stimulating the healing of articular tissues This device is similar to a commercially available continuous passive motion (CPM) machine on market nowadays. It will give advantages on research of the input parameters that is angular flexion velocity and flexion angle of the knee. The purpose of this project is to develop testing device that was economical, user-friendly, green environmental and safe device for public or medical use.

Week 3

For week 3....
In consultation hour for FYP, I have discussed with my supervisor about the motor part...
Previous project use DC motor to operate the shaft for mechanical movement...
But it was lacked with power after load was applied...
So, my supervisor suggest me to do literature review on how knee joint therapy...
Through there I can selected the most ideal or most matching DC motor with the device...
This is sample picture of the DC motor that commonly used in CPM...


















Higher DC motor specification is needed to move the load...
From research I obtain from internet, there were some criteria for designing and constructing the Knee Joint Joint Therapy device...

  • Adjustability to a wide range of patient sizes
  • Comfort, particularly for long uninterrupted application
  • Use in a variety of settings: in bed while sleeping, while ambulating during the day, at home or in hospital
  • Durability
  • Light weight
  • Low cost
  • Full anatomic range of motion capability
  • Multi-axis motion capability
  • Minimum loading of joints
  • Precise and variable range of motion (ROM) control
  • Speed control
  • Safe and reliable operation
  • Simple and straightforward operation
  • Protection for unstable joints
A variety of basic options are available to the designer and builder of CPM machines. Each selection results in a greater or lessor achievement of the above goals and a unique device results from every unique selection of options.

Week 2

As salam...
In week 2, after some research, I try to come up with some rough design for this project...
Also including dimension and angle of moving part in the device...
I will discuss with my supervisor about the design of this knee joint therapy device...



















But since it is was rough design sketch, it is not included with range of motion (ROM)...
What is range of motion?
Range of motion (or ROM), is the distance (linear or angular) that a movable object may normally travel while properly attached to another object...
Generally speaking, range of motion refers to distance and direction of a joint can move to its full potential...

For my final year project, I have discussed with  my supervisor, madam Naszariah on senior's project last year...
Some adjustment on new title, that is Knee Joint Therapy Device...
The original or common name is Continuous Passive Motion (CPM)...

I haven't fully discovered the function of this device function yet....
Normally this device used in Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic section for knee recovery...
It is used during the first phase of rehabilitation following a soft tissue surgical procedure or trauma...
